IN DEFENSE OF OBAMA (#3)

Issue: HOLDING PARTY TOGETHER

At a time when the Democratic primaries are not over and nomination not
settled, a fear is being set afloat that if nominated Senator Obama will not be
able to hold the party together. The reason being advanced is the almost
flocking of the white working classes, and the seniors to Senator Hillary
Clinton. A similar fear, though in a feeble way, is spread against Senator
Clinton also.

In my opinion, this fear is imaginary and will never materialize. Almost every
one knows that both Senator Clinton and Senator Obama have the Oratorical
skills to explain to, motivate, and win their audience to their point of views.
There are other reasons too.

1st: Battle Front: The Primaries are inner party battles. In such a battle, the
contestants have same goals but differ on strategies. Naturally, in every
contest, the watchers and voters are the free to follow the contestant of their
choice. Sometimes, the preferences do take wrong colors of race, religion,
sect  and gender, which are injurious to democracy and issues.

But this does not mean at all that the preference for one or the other
contestant will give rise to disliking for the Party if one’s preferred contestant
fails to reach the finish line. It is not only premature but misleading also to
conclude that a Democrat will become a Republican if his or her choice fails.

2nd: ISSUES VS. COLOR: Once, the inner party battle concludes, the voters’
choice (including the Democratic voters) will be between the Democratic
nominee and Senator John McCaine. It is beyond imagination that a
Democratic white voter will rush to Senator John McCaine, simply because,
he is white or a black Republican will rush to Senator Obama, simply
because, he is non-white. Both the Parties have members from all
nationalities and races, who came on for issues that were dear to them.
Switch over for the sake of color is not the ground reality. It is just the
argument of the scaremongers.

3rd: IDEOLOGY: The Democrats and the Republicans are poles apart in
their ideology and goals The members who join a party, whether on referrals
or birth or issues, imbibe the party ideology, subconsciously. This ideology
surpasses nationalities, colors and creeds. Political conversion is as painful
as the religious conversion. It is, therefore, not true that a Democratic will
become a Republican if the nominee is not of his/her choice and vice versa.

4th: CONTESTANTS: Both the contestants, Senator Hillay Clinton and
Senator Obama are true Democrats and persons of great repute. Both of
them have publicly and explicitly made public that they would unite the party
behind the winner.

I, therefore, sincerely believe that the earliest nomination will not hurt the
Democrats as the issues, ideology and personalities will overshadow the
race, nationality, and gender.
